Internet Basics

You may use the internet, but are you familiar with the different aspects of browsing the web? Let’s go over a few definitions and analogies to help you be a more useful employee, and web user:

The World Wide Web
Sometimes called, “the information superhighway,” the world wide web (www) consists of many different websites- a collection of pages you can view on your computer through a web browser.

Web BrowserThis is the software program you use on your computer to view web pages. If the World Wide Web were the different towns you can visit, the web browser would be your car. It is the vehicle through which you see all the sights on the world wide web.

Some examples would be:
Microsoft Internet Explorer
Mozilla Firefox
Google Chrome
Apple Safari
Opera Browser

Internet Service Provider
This is the company that provides your connection to the internet. You could say your ISP makes up the “streets and highways” of the internet. They provide the means to open you up to the rest of the world, so you are capable of visiting all these wonderful websites, like www.hutar.com. You might receive internet service from any number of companies, such as AT&T, Comcast, Verizon, or one of many regional ISPs.

Search Engine
This is a website that indexes the most popular pages on the web, and categorizes them for you by keyword so you can find them easier, and discover new websites.

Some examples would be:
Google
Bing
Yahoo
Ask.com
